Hi, I’m Kara.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner in San Diego, CA.
What is Somatic Psychotherapy?
Our bodies are deeply involved and deeply important to our experience of and relationship to ourselves and our world. Good therapy—deep healing—involves the body in the process.
Somatic Psychotherapy is the integration of traditional psychotherapy with Somatic Experiencing (SE), a modality developed by Dr. Peter Levine, based on his observations of animal patterns in the wild. Wild prey animals, similar in many ways to humans, are rarely traumatized despite facing frequent threats to their survival. Animals in the wild use innate mechanisms to regulate and resolve high levels of activation needed for survival. Though humans are more complex, we are beautifully designed to use the same mechanisms to regulate and resolve the energy and emotion related to our own lived experiences.
We are animal, after all.
Somatic psychotherapy supports the body in accessing stuck energy, emotion and movement that keep us in present day patterns immobilization or overwhelm. We use the bodily “felt sense” to tap into these experiences in a safe, slow and supported way, to allow your brilliant system the time, space and support it needs for exploration, resolution, regulation. The beautiful container of our body, with enough support, aids us in navigating the difficulties of our lives, while soaking up all the good stuff along with it—giving us greater access to connection, compassion, ease of being, and a coherent sense of self.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I guide you, through use of your mind and body, to identify, explore and reorganize rigid patterns, memories, thought patterns and beliefs so that you can have access to deeper healing, and a deeper experience of self.

General Support
Sometimes we have the sense that we just need some support or a witness to our experiences and development—no significant mental health challenges to address or treat, just a desire to be seen and walked alongside as we explore and come into relationship with previously unknown parts of ourselves. This exploration can be necessary, exciting, life-giving, while also being scary, disorienting or anxiety-inducing. It can be helpful to have someone create a safe-enough environment to do this deeper exploration, to support when things feel overwhelming, and to encourage and challenge us— our thoughts and our behaviors— in necessary ways.

Trauma
If you are suffering from unresolved experiences that still feel very present—whether relational, physical, medical or otherwise—healing and relief from distress is possible. Your trauma may have happened young, through consistent experiences of neglect or misattunement; we call this developmental trauma. Or, it may have been acute—a one time event with lasting impact. Either way, trauma doesn’t need to be a life sentence. I utilize an approach called Somatic Experiencing for the treatment of trauma and trauma symptoms. While this healing work is slow and takes time, we will tap into your innate resilience and work with your mind AND your body to resolve the residual effects of trauma to help you feel and be present and safe in your current life. Resolving trauma helps to restore natural and healthy rhythms of energy, rest, connection and vitality in your life.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
OCD is considered one of the most debilitating and misunderstood mental health issues, even amongst professionals. Media frequently get OCD wrong, only adding to the stigma and challenge of overcoming it. Obsessive and intrusive thoughts can be distressing, scary, and out of alignment with our values. When you add compulsions to the mix, the cycle can hijack your life. If you think you may be suffering with OCD, talking to an OCD specialist about your symptoms can help with diagnosis. Diagnosis and understanding of how OCD works makes treating it much more possible. If OCD is something you suffer with, focused treatment utilizing Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic interventions can help.

Grief and Loss
“Grief offers a wild alchemy that transmutes suffering into fertile ground.” —The Wild Edge of Sorrow, Francis Weller
Grief is a universal experience, impacting every person at some point in their lives. Though grief and loss are expected, they are often unwelcome, bringing profound emotional distress as we learn to navigate a new life without. There is no way to sidestep the pain of the grieving process, however moving through the process with support makes all the difference. We need certain types of support—conditions for grieving—to help us not just “get through” our sorrow, but learn from it, to bring us to a place of more aliveness.

I am what is considered “eclectic,” with areas of specialty that we draw upon. Sometimes sessions look like teaching skills to manage overwhelm, others it’s traditional “talk therapy” and occasionally, it’s breaking down different therapeutic ideas so you can understand how they apply to your life. Often, it’s a combination of many different interventions. Depending on what you’re working on, we may use tools from different therapeutic approaches, including Somatic Experiencing (SE), Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF), Exposure-Response Prevention Therapy (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and more. Of all these approaches, I default to SE and IRF (parts work) in each session. Because of this, you can expect a slower pace to sessions than you may be used to. I will check in with you regularly to see what is working and what isn’t—therapy is your space and your time, and it’s my goal to give you the support you want and need as you learn to trust yourself in working through challenges.

Trauma is, unfortunately, a universal experience. Our bodies and nervous systems have an amazing capacity to heal and regulate themselves. Sometimes, the trauma we experience overwhelms our systems and we feel frozen in time—stuck in the same fight/flight/freeze process as if we were reliving the trauma in our bodies today. Somatic Experiencing is a body-based approach that supports your nervous system to process the “residue” trauma has left in our bodies. Instead of traditional talk therapy that asks that you tell and process the narrative of your trauma, Somatic Experiencing helps your body find a deep sense of safety by resolving its activated (fight/flight) or deactivated (freeze) states so that you can get back to the natural rhythms of nervous system regulation—protecting you when necessary, and enjoying both activity and rest when not. Somatic Experiencing is a gentle and supportive approach to resolving the activation in our bodies leftover from the challenges of life. If you’d like to learn more, please go here.
A Somatic Experiencing Practitioner is someone who has completed three years of study, in addition to 40+ hours of consultation through Somatic Experiencing International. It is the highest certificate available to those studying Somatic Experiencing.

Therapy is different for everyone. Some folks need a few sessions to learn new skills, while others will need more long-term support to work through complex trauma or challenging relational dynamics. There is no “good” or “bad” timeline for “finishing” therapy—it takes the time that it takes. As your capacity for managing your experiences increases, you may need less and less therapeutic support. That said, my hope is to support you moving through the therapeutic process at a pace that works for you. I am here for as long as you need!

COVID-19 changed the way we do therapy, making virtual sessions more available. Virtual therapy is an option, as long as you reside in the state of California. If you live outside of California, I would love to refer you to a provider in your area, when possible. If you are in San Diego but need a virtual session, you can “opt in” to virtual sessions at any time. Some clients are always virtual. In both situations, a HIPAA-compliant video link is sent for all sessions. To receive virtual treatment, you must reside in the state of California, where I am licensed. If you prefer to be in-person, great! For in-person sessions, my only ask is that you don’t come to session while sick!

It’s true, therapy is expensive, and it’s definitely worth the investment. Therapy has been shown to improve overall quality of life and relationship satisfaction, as well as decrease risk factors for medical issues such as high blood pressure, sleep issues, and the overall impact of stress on the body. It’s a short-term expense for a long-term payoff. I offer sliding scale payment on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested in this, please do let me know. And while I’m not “in-network” with insurance companies, we do have the ability to have a “single case agreement” with your insurance provider. Please contact me with questions about this process, as it varies between clients and insurance providers.

I get it—things come up! Whether you’re sick, have a scheduling conflict or need to cancel for any other reason, just let me know! I have a 36-hour notice policy: there is no fee if you cancel your session within 36 hours. If you let me know after the 36 hour marker, I do charge a “late cancellation” fee, which is the full fee for the session. While not ideal, please keep in mind, I have reserved this time in our schedule for you and without enough notice, often aren’t able to fill that space to provide a service to someone else. If you need to cancel within 36 hours but are able to reschedule within the same week, there is no late cancellation fee.
